In seguito al lavoro seminale di Modigliani e Miller, molti ricercatori hanno rivelato che la struttura del capitale, in generale, ha un effetto sulla performance aziendale, anche se la direzione di questo effetto è in gran parte contesa. Purtroppo, però, la maggior parte di questi risultati si basa su dati provenienti da istituzioni non finanziarie. Questo studio riguarda il rapporto tra la struttura del capitale e la performance delle banche in Ghana. Nell'analisi sono stati utilizzati i dati del panel di tutte le banche del Ghana per il periodo decennale (1999-2008). Utilizzando i dati della Bank of Ghana e un modello modificato di Berger e di Patti (2002), lo studio presenta risultati molto interessanti sulla teoria della struttura del capitale. Ci si aspetta che questi risultati contribuiscano in modo non trascurabile a risolvere il rompicapo della struttura del capitale e forniscano anche una direzione per i responsabili politici.
