In 1938, in the midst of the Great Depression, Francis Phelan—former professional baseball player, part-time gravedigger, and full-time vagabond—returns to his native city of Albany, from which he had run away 22 years prior after an unfortunate accident. He is accompanied by Helen, an alcoholic drifter with whom he has shared his life for years now. Upon his return, memories and ghosts from a violent past haunt him at every turn. His reunion with his family, with people and places that witnessed his upbringing, contrasted with his 20 years of marginalized and tormented existence, make Francis feel, for the first time in his life, that redemption is possible.
