孟喜子的媳妇银杏是孟家集最有名的漂亮媳妇儿，而且还有一种特殊的体香。银杏在夏日中午回家的路上在柳树后撒尿时遇上了当时正在修炼的狐仙，而与狐仙结下了仙缘之后一病不起。百岁奶奶看破了银杏得病的秘密而对其进行医治。但知道这个秘密的三个人都先后去世，百岁奶奶是老死了，银杏的丈夫被人所害，婆婆则在饥荒之年活活饿死，银杏拉扯着三个孩子艰难地度日如年。大炼钢铁和天灾引起了当年的庄稼歉收。史无前例的饥馑岁月来到了，为了半袋黄豆，天成大叔疯了，村子里偷盗之风盛行，集体经济眼看就要垮台，根子挺身而出配合上级领导刹住了这股不正之风。银杏的儿子晚上解手时被白胡老人追出村子，由此引起了一场声势浩大的驱邪和灭狐运动，银杏终于受不了由此而带来的对她精神上的打击又一病不起，根子愤怒地烧毁了用来驱邪的木剑并护送银杏住院治病，邓医生终于给根子讲述了陌生人小胡的来龙去脉，四清运动开始了，一场更大的劫难在等待着他们......
