Los pitagóricos trataron de reducir el cosmos a razones numéricas. Aristóteles criticó enérgicamente este predominio de lo cuantitativo, insistiendo en la primacía ontológica de otras categorías, como las de cualidad y sustancia. La negación del vacío, la finitud del cosmos, la necesaria tridimensionalidad del espacio, el carácter destructor del tiempo y otras muchas afirmaciones físicas y cosmológicas de Aristóteles se sustentan, según el autor, en la teoría aristotélica del lugar. El problema ontológico que, desde la filosofía natural de Aristóteles, constituye el hilo conductor de la reflexión.
