Su prolongado contacto con los místicos cristianos, junto con la conciencia de la necesidad de un estudio in-terdisciplinar sobre este tema, había convencido al autor de lo complejo que resultaba llevarlo a cabo. Por eso subraya siempre lo imprevisible y singular del proceso místico cristiano: iniciativa del Dios personal, conocido y alcanzado ante todo a través del amor. Y por ello evita todo intento de una presentación sistemática de la vida mística, de una teoría general, o de una definición apriorística porque siempre habrá que partir del dato “expe-riencial” inherente a su carácter dinámico. Por fin, aunque el P. Bernard ha limitado aquí su estudio “a la mística reconocida por la Iglesia Católica”, la lucidez de sus análisis le permite hacer numerosas referencias esclarece-doras al Oriente cristiano y a los místicos no cristianos.
