The original manuscript was written in 1919 by Capt. Alexander White Spence, the Aide-de-Camp to the Division Commander. Consisting on over 630 pages of text, typed on legal size paper and accompanied by photographs and maps, the manuscript has been reproduced in two volumes. Volume 1: contains the narrative history of the 36th Division, A.E.F. from its stateside training through demobilization. 91 photographs selected by Spence to accompany the manuscript are reproduced, as well as a section on Capt. Spence and his service. Spence's personal Victory Medal and insignia decorate the back cover of both volumes.
