Synopsis "The Journey to the West, Books 4, 5 and 6: Three Classic Stories in Simplified Chinese and Pinyin, 600 Word Vocabulary Level: 13 (Journey to the West (in Simplified Chinese)) (in English)"

This book contains the full text of the 4th, 5th and 6th stories in our Journey to the West series for people learning to read Chinese. The three stories told here are unchanged from our original versions except for minor editing and reformatting.Book #4 ("The Young Monk"): Five hundred years after the events of the previous book, "The Immortal Peaches", the Buddha decides it is time to bring his wisdom to China, and he needs someone to lead the journey. A young couple undergo a terrible ordeal around the time of the birth of their child Xuanzang. The boy grows up as an orphan but at age eighteen he learns his true identity, avenges the death of his father and is reunited with his mother. Xuanzang will later fulfill the Buddha’s wish and lead the journey to the west.Book $5 ("The Emperor in Hell"): Another storyline starts innocently enough, with two good friends chatting as they walk home after eating and drinking at a local inn. One of the men, a fisherman, tells his friend about a fortuneteller who advises him on where to find fish. This seemingly harmless conversation between two minor characters triggers a series of events that eventually cost the life of a supposedly immortal being, and cause the great Tang Emperor himself to be dragged down to the underworld. He is released by the Ten Kings of the Underworld, but is trapped in hell and only escapes with the help of a deceased courtier.Book 6 ("The Journey Begins"): Barely making it back to the land of the living, the Emperor selects the young monk Xuanzang to undertake the journey, after being strongly influenced by the great bodhisattva Guanyin. The young monk sets out on his journey. After many difficulties his path crosses that of Sun Wukong, and the monk releases him from his prison under a mountain. Sun Wukong becomes the monk’s first disciple. These stories are written, as much as possible, using the 600-word vocabulary of HSK3. They are presented in Simplified Chinese characters and pinyin, and include an English version and complete glossary. Free audiobooks are available on YouTube’s Imagin8 Press channel, and on our website, www.imagin8press.com.
