Julio César de Mello y Souza, más conocido por su seudónimo Malba Tahan, fue un escritor y profesor brasileño especializado en matemáticas. Escribía sus obras bajo dicho seudónimo para atraer la atención hacia su obra didáctica en su país de origen al tratarse de un nombre extranjero. Una identidad árabe que inventó con este objetivo y habiendo indagado durante más de siete años en la cultura y lengua árabe.

Mello escribió 69 libros de cuentos, 541 de matemáticas y diversos libros de otras temáticas. En 1995 vendió más de dos millones de copias con sus publicaciones. Su obra más famosa es El hombre que calculaba, un relato centrado en las matemáticas y que gira en torno a la cultura árabe. Tras recibir múltiples reconocimientos y conociéndose ya su verdadera identidad, el autor se añadió legalmente el nombre de Malba Tahan.
