'The Medal' first appeared in the best selling anthology 'Heroes. 100 Poems by the New Generation of War Poets' compiled by John Jeffcock from poems written by servicemen, ex-service men and their relatives selected by The Poet Laureate Carol Anne Duffey, Baron Richard Dannatt, Head of the armed forces, Simon Rae of' Poetry Pleas and the compiler. This is not a book of war poetry although it does contain some war poems and short stories. Like the liquorice confection, it is a mixture of all sorts. The proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Army Benevolent Fund for the re-habitation of Servicemen injured in the many conflicts in all parts of the world.
