In the Cold War era of an alternate history, the Soviet Union has taken control of the northern island of Japan and cut it off from the rest of the country. Just south across the strait, a boy named Hiroki is fascinated by the mysterious tower the Soviets have constructed on the unreachable island, and he and his friend Takuya decide to build a plane that will take them over to see it. As they work, a girl named Sayuri becomes a part of their lives and the promise to one day fly to the tower. But when she disappears without a trace, their promise I left unfulfilled-possibly forever.

Makoto Shinkai (新海誠) Director de cine, escritor, productor, animador, dibujante y actor de voz japonés. Nació en 1973 en Nagano (Japón) y estudió literatura japonesa en la universidad. Realizó su primer cortometraje Ella y su gato mientras trabajaba en una empresa de videojuegos. Con Voces de una estrella distante, estrenada en 2002, gana numerosos galardones, entre ellos, el Premio del Público de la Tokyo International Anime Fair 21. El lugar que nos prometimos, de 2004, recibe el Premio a la mejor Película de Animación de los Premios de Cine Mainichi. Sus obras 5 cm por segundo (2007) y El jardín de las palabras (2013) también han sido muy aclamadas. Sus últimas exitosas creaciones son Your name (2016) y El tiempo contigo (2019).
