Unforeseen happenstances that somehow catapulted me from the verge of quitting school to college on a path dotted with financial and legal hiccups, and eventually ended up as a professor in an American university (pp. 24 - 85). C: My brief military service in Taiwan taught one naïve college graduate to become a better and matured person (pp. 86 - 110).D: My ancestors struggled for survival over 200 years in the frontier interior of Taiwan, marked with official corruptions and brutality as well as banditry, ethnic conflicts, family feud, and heinous lawlessness.
