As the maestro turned to acknowledge the thunderous applause of a sold out amphitheater, and the orchestra prepared for the downbeat of 'Peter Gunn, ' Mr. Mancini's lead and solo trumpeter invited me to play the upcoming solo in his stead. Little did I suspect that my performance would be the launching of an 18-year contract with the master of melody."
