Todos los relatos aquí recogidos fueron escritos por Graves entre 1924 y 1969 y divididos en tres secciones y todos ellos, según dice el autor en el prólogo se basan en episodios autobiográficos, aunque algunos de ellos resulten inverosímiles como "Mátalos, mátalos", "Los negros de Whitaker" o, el mismo que da título a este volumen, "Un brindis por Ava Gadner". Un peculiar paseo por la vida de Graves, desde el sombrío y kafkiano mundo de su juventud hasta la luminosa cima de su madurez.
