La trama se centra en la relación atormentada que se establece entre un padre, Ferruccio, de sesenta años, y un hijo, Oreste, que ha asumido el papel de tutor de su padre, confundiéndose la relación paternal y filial. El enamoramiento del padre de una joven y la fuga con ella desata la airada reacción del hijo, embargado por un importante complejo edípico. La comedia se puebla de extravagantes personajes que pululan por la casa familiar mostrando sus miserias o sus angustias.
