Mit der Akzeptanz des Gender Mainstraming in der Europäischen Union wurde ein Prozess eingeleitet, dieses gleichstellungspolitische Konzept forschungspolitisch zu wenden. Gender Mainstreaming wurde bei der Vorbereitung und Umsetzung des Sechsten EU-Forschungsrahmenprogramms (2002 bis 2006) erstmals angewandt und diese Anfangsphase steht im Mittelpunkt des Buches.
