In feministisch geprägten Kunstproduktionen der 1980er Jahre erfolgte in den USA eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit Sexualitätsentwürfen und Geschlechterverhältnissen im Hinblick auf deren ökonomische Bedingungen. Susanne Huber untersucht das Motiv des Begehrens als Schnittstelle zwischen den kontroversen Debatten um Pornografie und der Kritik an Darstellungskonventionen in kommerziellen Massenmedien im Umfeld der Appropriation Art. Vor dem Hintergrund postmoderner Kulturtheorie und Konsumkritik verweisen die spezifischen Techniken der Aneignung in den Werken von Lutz Bacher, Sarah Charlesworth und Barbara Bloom auf komplexe Konstellationen hegemonialer Differenzkonstruktionen und gesellschaftlicher Wertzuschreibungen sowie die formalen Konflikte der Wiederholung.
