Den grö ten Teil seines Schaffens widmete Gustav Schüler der religiösen Lyrik. In seinen Geschichten sind das religiöse Suchen und Kämpfen und die Sehnsucht nach Gott lebendig. Das hei e Ringen um Gottesgewi heit und Gottesfrieden spricht aus ihnen. Einige seiner Gedichte wurden vertont und in Kirchengesangbücher übernommen und die Kirchenglocken von Stettin und Dessau trugen seine Worte. Er galt als gro er Lyriker seiner Zeit.
